We are well-versed in the world of whitetails with boots-on-the-ground vetting. Therefore, when you call our office to book your next whitetail adventure, you can be assured of getting solid, up-to-date recommendations. Here are some of our favorite whitetail destinations in the lower 48. All require drawing a tag, and some require preference points. Kansas – Drawing a whitetail tag in Kansas is typically very easy. Usually, you can draw the very first time you apply (80% draw odds). Therefore, early booking is essential. The Sunflower State offers muzzleloader hunts in September, archery hunts during the November rut and high-powered rifle hunts take place in early December. Each hunt offers its advantages. During the September muzzleloader season, the deer are habitual, consistently traveling between the same bedding and feeding areas, with clients hoping they will move before dark. This time of year is probably your best stretch to harvest a giant. Naturally, you can’t go wrong hunting with your bow in November when the deer are in rut. In Kansas, crossbows are legal. The rifle hunt in December is probably the most challenging time frame of the season; however, hunting with this long-range tool is always attractive to our clients. We feel the whitetail draw in Kansas could become more complex and are now recommending our clients buy a preference point, so they are assured of drawing a tag in the future. Iowa – Hunting in Iowa does require preference points. This is probably the best state to hunt for those trying to harvest a big whitetail buck, so definitely start building preference points today. It will typically take a minimum of four preference points to draw a tag during the archery season, which coincides with the November rut. Iowa offers gun hunting with shotgun and muzzleloader. We book our shotgun clients in December and our muzzleloader clients in early January. Hunting during these firearm seasons is generally more challenging than the November archery season; however, it does take less points to draw, allowing clients to hunt Iowa more often. Gun hunts typically only take two preference points to draw. Many of our clients hunt whitetails in Kansas while they are building their Iowa points. It’s a great way to go! Montana & Wyoming – Hunting whitetails out West is becoming more and more popular. Our enormous private ranches located in Montana and Wyoming are full of deer and offer extremely exciting hunting in the beauty and grandeur of the West. Furthermore, obtaining tags to hunt whitetails in these states is easy (typically drawing each time you apply). However, one must not miss the application deadlines – Montana’s deadline to apply is March 15th and Wyoming’s is May 31st. South Dakota – Clients often overlook South Dakota as a premium whitetail destination. This is a sleeper state and comparable to both Iowa and Kansas. Archery tags in South Dakota are over the counter. However, the rifle tags west of the Missouri River often take two to three preference points to draw. Hunting from ground blinds, ladder stands, and by spot and stalk are all effective methods in the rolling farmland and creek bottoms of beautiful South Dakota. In South Dakota, you can purchase preference points up until the December 15th application deadline. Start building deer points today!
